About Us

Our goal is to help people “Understand athletes' spinal injuries through the eyes of 2 orthopaedic spine surgeons"
We (Dr. Philip Louie, MD and Dr. Venu Nemani MD, PhD) are 2 orthopaedic spine surgeons who love sports and are absolute spine nerds. Our goal is to provide a unique expert insight into spine injuries and treatments that impact athletes, professional and amateur alike. Through one-on-one discussions and interviews with various surgeon/healthcare professionals and the athletes themselves, we work to:
• Provide education on the spine injuries and pathologies
• Dive into the anatomy of the spine
• Break down the surgeries and other treatments used to treat spine injuries
• Share the stories of athletes who have overcome their spine injuries and treatments

We will continue to find unique ways to educate you all and find new partners to collaborate with! We share a passion for education and providing a platform for others to share their experiences and knowledge. And we want to make this fun!

Thank you for tuning in and we hope you enjoy the content!

Why The Athlete Spine?

The premise was simple. We both share a passion for spine care and sports! In talking to athletes suffering from spine injuries, watching SportsCenter, and reading various news updates, we realized that there was a large disconnect between spine injuries that athletes were suffering and the general public's understanding of those injuries and the expected timeline and prospects for recovery after any type of treatment or surgery.

We often see athletes facing the challenges of recovery and rehabilitation from spine injuries (and operations) that seem like a black box—poorly understood and shrouded in mystery.

So, we thought it would be fun to bridge the enormous gap between athletes suffering spine injuries and the actual pathology, treatments, surgery and recovery. We wanted to share this platform with our surgeon colleagues, other professionals involved in healthcare, and some of the athletes themselves. Learning from both perspectives seemed like it would be fun and educational!
